New Guidance (Please Read!) on Girl Up Club IG Deactivations
Hi friends!
Thank you for your patience as Girl Up and Meta work together to limit the number of Instagram deactivations happening across our global clubs. We have heard all your feedback, and we wanted to provide a new update + some additional guidance.
Here’s the truth: Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, has used artificial intelligence to remove billions of (presumed) fake accounts. This is a positive (less false info on social media!), but Meta’s AI is getting a bit confused about club-based organizations like Girl Up and the thousands of Instagram club accounts we have!
Girl Up Staff are working as fast as we can to prove to Meta that all your club accounts aren’t just spam, but right now Meta does not have a way for us to mass reactivate all suspended accounts. As their policy states they must review each deactivation on a case-by-case basis, each account must be individually submitted to META for review, and it is taking longer than anticipated.
To speed up the process, please see the below updated guidance on how to reactivate your club account if it has already been deactivated. Please use the below guidance only moving forward.
-
Fill out this form to notify Girl Up staff about your account deactivation. The form is available in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. This is just an intake form for our records, and you will still need to complete all other steps below.
-
Send a message to Meta Support Tech Experts using these steps to request that your club account be reviewed and reactivated. After sending this message, a Meta rep should reach out to you via email with additional guidance.
-
When corresponding with Meta Support Tech Experts via email include [email protected] and [email protected] (Girl Up’s Meta rep) in the “CC” line. Under her guidance, we’re hopeful that this strategy will help reduce wait times.
-
Make sure all info provided is correct when you message Meta Support. For example, ensure that the email address associated with your account is accurate. If incorrect information is provided, it will delay the restoration of your account.
-
Please do not contact Meta through any other methods other than the form above and email. Do not contact Elizabeth, Girl Up’s Meta rep, directly. Following the above steps is the best way to ensure reactivation and working outside of this process could cause delay and strain relationships to Meta. We trust our youth leaders to respect Meta and Girl Up staff during this process, and understand we are doing everything in our power to get accounts back up online.
NOTE: Please allow two weeks from the submission date of the above steps before reaching out directly to Girl Up. If your account is not up and running within 14 days of messaging Meta Support, you can then email [email protected] to try and elevate your request.
We are additionally resharing steps to help prevent your Club Instagram account from being suspended:
-
Be sure to follow @GirlUp and the account for the region/country your club is located in: @girluplatam, @girluparg, @girlupchile, @girlupperu, @girlupbrasil, @girlupmx, @girlupusa, @girlupuk, @girlupafricaofficial, @girlupindia
-
Update your club account’s Instagram bio to include (1) the name of your club and (2) the country your club is located in. Here is the updated bio for all clubs to use:
"[Your Club Name] is a youth-led volunteer Club under @girlup, a leadership initiative founded by @unfoundation. Views expressed are our own." You can shorten this bio due to character limitations, only if needed, the most important thing is that your club's name is mentioned.
Note: While the steps above can prevent a potential deactivation, we unfortunately can't prevent all Meta deactivations from occurring. If your account is deactivated, please follow the steps listed above before contacting Girl Up individually. If your account is not up and running within two weeks of emailing META Support, you can then email Girl Up to intervene on your behalf.
We appreciate your partnership in this process.
Stay cool,
The Girl Up Communications Team
